The European Campaign board game

We started working on this vast board game back in 1978. As you can see it is an adaptation of Avalon Hill's Russian Campaign game to all of Europe using not one 22x28 inch board but 4 of them. The central point of the map is Budapest, capitol of Hungary. The game also integrates Avalon Hill's War at Sea counters and some of the sea zone aspects of that game. To the original rules we've added aircraft, and lots of ports. This game has a new feel to it, and its been difficult writing up rules that can reproduce historical events. The aircraft portion got so involved that we wrote a computer program to resolve air sorties. Fortunately, naval and ground combat remained fairly simple.

Our Alpha testing has gone thru 3 map and 3 counter revisions, and at this point we feel fairly confident that those portions of the game will not change again any time soon. The rules will take some time to iron out, along with the countless scenarios and mini games we intend to include in the final release. This has turned into a lifelong project, and interest in this style of board game is waining. We take hart in the fact that a good computer game requires a working game system and artwork, which we will already have when we finish.

Will we ever offer this game to the public? A very good question - with Avalon Hill acquiring smaller gaming companies in the 80's and then being acquired by Hasbro, and again sucked up by Wizards of the Coast, who knows? We've heard that the current publishing policy is to only reprint the top 25 selling items of Avalon Hills inventory. At this point, our European Campaign game is just an alpha test print hanging on our wall. Serious doubt exists on delivering it to the public, but our obsession remains....
