Have you priced large format printing and laminating lately? We did, and were very surprised to find how expensive its become. A trip to our local 24 hour printers revealed that printing in color was $7.00 per square foot, and another $3.00 per square foot to laminate. So a 2 x 3 foot print would be $60.00? and a 3 x 4 foot print would be $120.00? We thought that was a bit high. Apparently they don't get many gamers in for maps, and I bet their repeat business sucks. So we figured, with those prices, people would be using them for that once in a lifetime print. Well, gamers don't work that way when they need material for their campaigns.

Our next trip was to the local game stores. We saw tubes of cheap plastic game figures that come with a free 3 x 4 foot double sided map for $40.00. We also saw 2 x 3 foot double sided folded maps for $10.00. Well we didn't want to get into the plastic figure business right away, and those large maps wen't laminated, and were quite thin. They did have an excellent resolution to them and were like a glossy magazine paper. Not something you would want to sit a frosty mug onto in July though. Maps need to be reuseable and durable.

Well, we decided that the best way to price our maps was to figure out our cost. We mean just the material costs, we threw out out labor costs, equipment costs, software costs, and the time and effort we put into our artwork. So we're just factoring a margin on the paper, ink, and plastic laminate. Here is what we came up with for printing & laminating:

The Single denotes single sided printing, and double is for two sided prints. If all you need is lamination, we charge $1.00 per square foot for the 25 inch laminator and $2.00 per square foot for the 38" Laminator. The reason the E size 3x4 foot prints are priced disproportunately is that the ink and laminate is a lot more expensive, more than double the cost, and there is twice as much area too. The 2x3 foot printer we use is also newer and will print photo quality, the large printer is older and only supports 300dpi in full color. It is also limited to 4 ink cartridges instead of the 6 used by the photo printer. We'd like a 36" wide photo printer, but they cost $9,500.00. The demand for 3x4 foot prints just doesn't justify it right now.
